6. Qagour Dam, The Opal of All Old Iranian Dams

Construction Type:

This stone dam is made with chiseled limestones lying in rows of the same height with a plaster of mortar and sand between the rows. A water spillway is dug in the stone of the dam and there are raised or staired pools in the reservoir and on the right and left hand supports of the dam. The dam is 9 m wide at the base and becomes thinner toward the top. It is built directly on the marni-sandstone and conglomerate-base. A substructure made with the same material acts as the main support for the dam. The crest of the dam is 5.82 m long, 5.6 m wide and 18 m tall from the deepest point in the valley. The actual water capacity of the reservoir is estimated to be 350,000 cubic meters.

Features:

The material and resources existing in the area, like limestone used in revetting without mortar at the joints are put in the best use. An especial mortar of clastic rock and sand is used in the body of the dam and the limestone is baked and mixed in the mortar all done with the least possible transportation. It can be claimed that everything about this dam is initiative.

The water is supplied from a spring and through a floodway. Therefore a water spillway seems inevitable. But the built spillway includes only a shallow canal on the limestone part on the left hand support of the dam that carries the excess amount of water to the valley securely. So with the least operation the best result is obtained.
The constructor of the dam was well aware of the passage water pressure and has anticipated waterways in the body of the dam to collect the spilled water. He has also thought up a fine use for the amount of the limpid water spilled. To use the dam, simply the felts were taken away from inside of the holes in spillway’s stairs. There is a canal at the lowest part of the dam through which the last amount of water was used up and made the discharging of the sediments possible.

Location:

The dam id located in Tekab, 4 km eastern Tekab, in the first valley on Tekab-Chehar Tagh asphalt roadway and 2 km northeastern Qajour village.

Purpose:

It was mainly built to store the occasional floodwater and also collect the excess drinking water of the spring lying at upper part of the dam to supply water for crop irrigation in the adjacent village of Qajour and provide the water needed in green space irrigation in Tekab.

History:

The dam was built 60 years ago.
