4. Tazehshahr’s Traditional Dam, Serving the Inhabitants for Generations

Construction Type:

This earth-stone dam, which contains water replenishing and discharging systems, is made with stone and a plaster of mortar and sand. The dam crest is 31 m long, 7.4 m wide and 4.5 m high from the natural ground level and the earth part wraps the stone part at both sides.

The northern crest at the earth part of the dam is 600 m long and 3.5 m wide and the southern crest is 116 m long and 6 m wide. A traditional canal carries the water from the Dirik, a seasonal river, into the pond. Two pools are anticipated at two different levels of the stone part. The actual capacity of the dam is 2 million cubic meters.
 

Feature:

Some of this dams specifications are utilization of the material and sources existing at the site, such as clay and basalt rocks, with the least transportation, the emission of the water spillway by controlling the water flow entering the reservoir and the full recognition of the river’s typical manner that eventually leads us to store wasted winter water and exploit it in the irrigation season.
 

Location:

This dam is located in the city of Salmas, 4 km far from western Tazehshahr and 1 km far from upper Dirik bridge on the way from Salmas to Tazehshahr .
Purpose:
It was built to store the casual flow of the Dirik River in order to supply the water for the farmlands of the nearby cities and the aqueduct providing drinking water of Tazehshahr lying at the lower part of the reservoir.
 

History:

The construction goes back to Safavid dynasty in 400 years ago.
