The Poldasht desert is considered a geological exception among West Azerbaijan’s
deserts in which water bearing layers underlie hard rock (basalt). Bearing this
exceptional feature in mind and without making the essential preparations to
face it, despite the abundance of the superficial water and existence of
underground water ponds in this desert, getting access to water is really
difficult. Therefore, one way to supply the farmlands with water was to collect
the casual superficial water flow and that is exactly why Panahkandy Dam was
constructed. It is cleared from sediment and the upper surface of it is covered
with a cement plaster recently.
