Construction Type:

The main embankment wall of the dam stands 3.45 m tall from the ground level and stretches 157 m at the north and the other two subsidiary walls stand at the east of the reservoir. A pool is built at the base of the main embankment wall.

An upright square pole is built in the framework of the dam to operate the pool’s opening. A cabin is probably built to discharge the sediment at the lower part of the structure and at the mouth of the water flowing canal. This dam doesn’t have a water spillway.
 

Feature:

This dam owes its beautiful architecture and resistance to the skillful designers and constructors. Some other features of this structure are pure utilization of the existing natural resources such as basalt and lagging the subsidiary walls of the dam with aggregate clay at the interval between the two parallel walls.
 

Location:

This construction is located in the city of Makoo, 8 km from southern Poldasht and approximately 500 m from Panahkand village.
 

Purpose:

The Poldasht desert is considered a geological exception among West Azerbaijan’s deserts in which water bearing layers underlie hard rock (basalt). Bearing this exceptional feature in mind and without making the essential preparations to face it, despite the abundance of the superficial water and existence of underground water ponds in this desert, getting access to water is really difficult. Therefore, one way to supply the farmlands with water was to collect the casual superficial water flow and that is exactly why Panahkandy Dam was constructed. It is cleared from sediment and the upper surface of it is covered with a cement plaster recently.
